About us

A file converter built to be fast, free, and honest about how it works

SwiftConvert is a free online file converter for PDF, Word, Excel and image files. No account, no watermark, no hidden limits — just a tool that converts your file and gets out of your way. Here's who we are, how the technology behind SwiftConvert actually works, and the principles we hold ourselves to.

Why we built SwiftConvert

Most people who need to convert a PDF to Word, turn a spreadsheet into a PDF, or shrink an image don't want to install desktop software, create an account, or hand a document over to a service that quietly stores a copy of it. They want to upload a file, get the converted version back in the same format they expect, and move on with their day.

SwiftConvert was built around that single idea: online file conversion should be free, immediate, and respectful of the file you're converting. Every tool on the site — PDF to Word, Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, PDF to Excel, image conversion, and file compression — is designed to do one job accurately rather than bury it under upsells, forced sign-ups, or watermarks on the output.

How our conversion technology actually works

We're specific about this because file conversion quality depends entirely on the engine behind it, and we think you're owed a real answer, not marketing language.

Document conversions (PDF, Word, Excel)

PDF to Word, Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, and PDF to Excel run through LibreOffice on a secure conversion server. LibreOffice's conversion engine preserves the structural elements that make a document usable after conversion: paragraph styles, bold and italic formatting, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, embedded images, and headers and footers. Because PDF is a fixed-layout format while Word and Excel are structured formats, converting between them means reconstructing that structure — which is why a PDF that originated from a Word or Google Docs file converts more cleanly than a scanned PDF, which has no underlying text structure to begin with. We explain the specifics, including where formatting issues typically come from, in our file conversion guide.

Image conversion and compression

Converting between JPEG, PNG and WEBP, and compressing image files, happens entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API. These files are never uploaded to our servers at all — the conversion happens locally on your device, which matters if you're converting images that contain sensitive information such as screenshots, scanned IDs, or internal documents.

Why the distinction matters

We draw this line deliberately: document formats (PDF/Word/Excel) require server-side processing because reconstructing structured document data isn't something a browser can do reliably at scale, while image formats can be handled entirely client-side. Being transparent about which files touch a server and which don't is part of being honest about privacy — not just claiming "your files are safe" without explaining why.

Our commitment to your files

  • Files are discarded after conversion. Documents processed on our conversion server are deleted shortly after conversion completes. We do not store, index, or share uploaded files.
  • No account required. You can use every tool on SwiftConvert without creating a profile or handing over an email address.
  • No watermarks, no artificial limits. Converted files come out clean, and there's no per-file charge or forced upgrade path.
  • Client-side image processing. Image conversion and compression run in your browser, so those files never leave your device.

How we write our guides

Alongside the converter tools, SwiftConvert publishes a file conversion guide covering common questions — why a PDF to Word conversion loses formatting, why an Excel export splits across pages, the practical differences between JPEG, PNG and WEBP, and what compression actually changes in a file. This content is written from direct, hands-on testing of our own conversion pipeline, not paraphrased from other sites. When file formats, browser APIs, or our conversion engine change in ways that affect accuracy, we update the guide to match. If you spot something that's out of date or inaccurate, let us know — we correct errors promptly.

Who uses SwiftConvert

SwiftConvert is used by students converting assignments between PDF and Word, job seekers turning a Word résumé into a PDF, freelancers exporting invoices from Excel, and anyone who needs to quickly convert or compress an image without installing software. If you need a fast, free, no-signup way to convert PDF, Word, Excel or image files, that's exactly the problem SwiftConvert is built to solve.
